Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)

Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)

Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is an independent, international organization providing the global common language for corporate transparency.

We help businesses and other organizations understand and communicate their sustainability impacts.

The GRI Standards are a modular system of interconnected standards. They allow organizations to publicly report the impacts of their activities in a structured way that is transparent to stakeholders and other interested parties.

Who uses the GRI Standards, and who uses the reported information?

Any organization, large or small, public or private, from any sector or location, can use the GRI Standards. Reporters, stakeholders, and other information users draw on the Standards. Reporters within an organization use the Standards to report on the organization’s impacts in a credible way that is comparable over time and to other organizations. The Standards also help stakeholders and other information users understand what is expected from an organization to report on and use the information published by organizations in various ways.

The organization can use the disclosed information to assess its policies and strategies or to guide decision-making, such as setting goals and targets. Stakeholders can also use this information. For example, investors can use the reported information to assess how an organization integrates sustainable development into its strategy to identify financial risks and evaluate its long-term success. The information provided can also help other information users, such as analysts and policymakers in benchmarking and forming policy, and academics in their research.

The Structure of the GRI Standards

GRI 1: Foundation 2021 (GRI 1)

GRI 2: General Disclosures 2021 (GRI 2)

GRI 3: Material Topics 2021 (GRI 3)

The GRI Reporting Process

GRI 1 is the starting point for all organizations reporting using the GRI Standards in that it lays out key concepts and principles, and lists the requirements for reporting by the GRI Standards.

  1. Identifying and assessing impacts
  2. Determining material topics
  3. Reporting disclosures
  4. Reporting under the GRI Standards
  5. Navigating a report

Advantages of GRI

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) offers several advantages for businesses, including:

  1. Enhancing brand reputation and trust: By reporting on sustainability impacts, companies can demonstrate their commitment to responsible business practices, which can improve their reputation and build trust with stakeholders.
  2. Improving financial performance: Sustainability reporting can help companies identify risks and opportunities, leading to better decision-making and financial performance.
  3. Managing risks: By reporting on sustainability impacts, companies can identify and manage risks related to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors.
  4. Attracting and retaining investors: Investors are increasingly considering ESG factors when making investment decisions. Sustainability reporting can help companies attract socially responsible investors and improve access to capital.
  5. Engaging stakeholders: Sustainability reporting provides a platform for companies to engage with stakeholders, including employees, customers, suppliers, and the community, to understand their concerns and expectations.
  6. Driving operational efficiency and innovation: The data collection and analysis involved in sustainability reporting can lead to the identification of opportunities for cost savings, increased productivity, and reduced environmental impact.
  7. Gaining a competitive advantage: Embedding sustainability and ESG into core business functions can offer a competitive advantage, helping companies determine the long-term value of their company and its resilience.

The GRI Standards are widely used across the globe and offer a comprehensive approach to sustainability reporting, covering topics ranging from biodiversity to tax, waste to emissions, diversity, and equality to health and safety. They are available as a free public good and are the world’s most comprehensive sustainability reporting standards.
