Water footprints are classified into three types:

● Grey water footprint: It is the volume of fresh water required to assimilate the load of pollutants. Grey water or sullage refers to the freshwater required to dilute pollution which is in the form of wastewater generated in households or buildings without fecal contamination and contaminated water of agrichemicals.

● Blue water footprint: It is the consumption of water resource originating in surface and groundwater. It refers to irrigation from surface water and groundwater that is consumed and incorporated for crops during cultivation.

● Green water footprint: It is the rainwater that infiltrates into the soil which is not percolated in aquifer to replenish groundwater. It is utilized by the plants and soil biota.
